Rutledge Stadium in Converse.
Lady Rockets coach is relying heavily on a "youth movement" that has several freshmen and sophomores partaking in the relays and soloing in individual competition.
Sophomore owns the city's fastest times in both the 200meter, a 24.41, and the 400meter, a 56.19. She took first in the 200 in last week's Thunderbird Relays by cutting almost threequarters of a second off her previous best time in carding the 24.41.
"She's just such a gifted athlete, she's strong in everything we ask her to do," Gerbich said. Horton ran the second leg in both the 4by100 and 4by200 teams that took first in the Tbird Relays, aiding Judson's point total of 163 in outdistancing the secondplace finish of the O'Connor Lady Panthers, who tallied 98 points. Meet host Wagner finished fifth with 54 points.
Another sophomore, Talajah Murrell, could have a huge impact in the district meet. In addition to joining Horton on two relays, she will be out to defend her district and regional longjump crown.
She leaped 186 last year to advance to the state meet as a freshman; she's also run a 12.01 in the 100, among the four or five best times in the city.
"(Murrell) went to state in the long jump. (Last year), we couldn't even get her to jump, and when she finally did, she went to state," Gerbich said, adding that she'll be competing in the high jump as well at district.
Three freshmen, , Mariah Johnson and Darionne Gibson, will have a role in deciding the outcome of the district meet. Johnson placed second behind Horton in the Tbird Relay 200meter with a 25.09 and has turned in a 58.39 in the 400meter, among the best in town. She also runs two relay legs, in the 4by100 and 4by400, and is expected to enter the triple jump.
"And Darionne Gibson could be a surprise in the triple jump," Gerbich said. "They're just a young group, overall; a great group of kids who are starting to put things together, the more they get out there on the track."
If anyone is primed to keep Judson from winning the 255A title, Gerbich expects it to be Smithson Valley. As strong as Judson is in the relays, the Lady Rangers are just as strong in the distances. Sophomore has logged the area's top 800, 1600 and 3,200 times for the Lady Rangers, while its 1,600meter relay team is second to Judson's for best area performance.
Judson's boys' team is looking to repeat as district champions. A handful of athletes will look to lead the Rockets to victory; again, starting with the relays.
The tandem of , , Tre Flowers and Brandon Sanders ran a stellar 1:26.40 in the 4by200, good enough for third at the Texas Relays March 30 in Austin. Flowers is among the city leaders in the long jump, having leaped 22 feet, 6 inches at the Texas Relays, the thirdbest distance in the city this year.
Gatewood ran a 21.32 second 200 meters on March 2 at the East Central Invitational, and Sanders has the city's best 400 meter time, 47.88 seconds in the March 9 Judson Relays.
Johnson and Gatewood teamed with Flowers and to take the 4by200 at the TBird Relays last week, clocking a 1:28.30. Johnson, Lewis, Sanders and Gatewood clocked a 3:18.18 in the 4by400 last week, taking first by a full second over a foursome of runners from East Central, which won the meet with 125 points; Judson finished second, with 109.
Wagner's 4by100 team of , , and Isaiah Lee took gold in the TBird 4by100, while its 4by200 team finished second, so don't discount Wagner's ability to run and approach the medal stand in the district relays.
Lee won the 100 meter last week in 10.61, while Allen finished second in the 200 meter, with a 22.26 just threeone hundredth of a second behind the winner. has the city's top high jump of 6foot8,sac michael kors, and finished second in the Tbird Relays triple jump, covering 44 feet. won the Tbird Relay long jump, covering 20 feet, 10 inches..
