Choosing a Bag for Work
A personal fave: The Filson Original Briefcase (Photo courtesy of FREE/MAN)
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I love getting questions from readers. It's great inspiration for stories and gives me a direct line in to what guys want to know. So ask away! This one came in a few days ago from a reader who needs a professional upgrade on his man bag:"I carry a bag for work that is really a soccer coaches bag (all synthetic materials, orange/black/gray, lots of pockets). I originally bought it to serve as a diaper bag. I think it probably not professionallooking enough for my current job (high school administrator).
I want to find something that is professional but not stuffy. I don carry a lot of stuff some papers, an iPad. Do you have any suggestions? Isa toneddown messengers bag (Patagonia, say) too sporty for a professional to carry and stillbe taken seriously?
I usually wear a sports jacket, slacks, and tie to work. I seldom dress any farther down than slacks and a sweater. I 34 and athletic." Sean B.
In a world of casual work environments, I'd say your work uniform is dressier than a lot of other guys I know. For that reason, I think the Patagonia bag is a tad casual (though I love the brand).
I'd consider a brown leather briefcase or messenger style bag. Black is too serious (and screams corporate lawyer or businessman). But brown is easier to transition from work setting to more casual encounters. Look for shades that range from rich caramels to deeper chocolates. And I actually think it looks pretty cool when the leather starts to age and wear. Just like your jeans, it's as if you're putting your unique stamp on your bag. Cole Haan, Coach, louis vuitton femmes, Banana Republic or, if you're feeling fancy, Bally and Louis Vuitton make some great bags.
Another great option:Coach Medium Messenger
A waxed canvas bag with leather details is another classic. The upside is that these materials are also usually more affordable than allleather bags. Choose dark colors, like army green, navy or gray so it won't show wear and tear. Leather accents (such as handles or piping) add interest as well as sophistication. Try: J. Crew, Filson or Jack Spade.
