Executive tackles business ethics
Mario Toneguzzi, nike free sko,A Calgary executive told the city's business and community leaders this week that the most important leadership principle is following the Golden Rule.
Speaking Wednesday at the 44th annual Calgary Leadership Prayer Breakfast, Ken Kunz, vicepresident, Western Power, TransCanada Energy, said leadership principles are learned and developed at a young age.
"Someone asked me 'what do you think the most important principle of leadership is?' . My answer was the same answer that Jesus gave when He was asked what the greatest commandment was," Kunz told the crowd at the Westin hotel. "Love others as you love yourself. Or in the secular world, treat others as you'd like to be treated. The Golden Rule."
And he said leaders have to lead by example.
"Leadership starts with serving and sacrifice," he said.
As a high school football player with St. Francis Browns under the leadership of legendary coach Gary Deman, Kunz learned the importance of teamwork and helping others, putting others before oneself. The simple concept was that there are no individual heroes on the football squad, only the team.
"Sometimes in life you've got to carry people," said Kunz, reflecting on past high school football drills of carrying teammates up a hill during practice.
"Leadership is simply something you can personally do to make that team successful. The quarterback and the running backs are only as good as the guys who are blocking for them."
Kunz also said prayer was an integral part of his life.
"Prayer is important and oftentimes it's all we have left. Please don't discount the value of it," said Kunz, adding that his faith is a huge part of who he is.
"I believe God hears our prayers and the Bible tells us that."
Ken King, president and chief executive of the Calgary Flames, who emceed the event, said the prayer breakfast is "one of the most important events in Calgary."
Al Duerr, former mayor of Calgary and now director and chief executive of General Magnetic International Inc., said business leaders have to apply and live out their faith and values in their daily lives, and in corporate boardrooms, not solely in churches.
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said each individual has the power to take on a leadership role and the power to change the community..
